Abstract:This document presents a parametric study that demonstrates the broad applicability of the soil nail wall load and resistance factor design (LRFD) and analysis procedure that is detailed in Geotechnical Engineering Circular No. 7 (GEC 7), Soil Nail Walls Reference Manual (FHWA-NHI-14-007), to various soil nail wall design heights, soil parameters, and different commercially available software programs. The parametric study uses a framework for the design of soil nail walls that considers the factors of safety used in the allowable stress design (ASD) analysis method while integrating LRFD design principles as demonstrated in GEC 7. The study starts by analyzing a soil nail structure using an ASD-based limit equilibrium (LE) slope stability program at a defined minimum target factor of safety. From the LE results, the nominal tensile, pullout, and facing loads of each soil nail are extracted. The extracted data are then checked using the LRFD platform using the procedures, and the load and resistance factors, presented in GEC 7.
