Abstract:This annual publication contains descriptions of current research, development and demonstration (RD&D) projects sponsored and funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). These projects are conducted under the authority of Section 6(a) of the Urban Mass Transportation Act of 1964, as amended (78 Stat. 302, 49 U.S.C. 1601 et. seq.). This statute authorizes the Secretary of Transportation "to undertake re- search, development, and demonstration projects in all phases of urban mass transportation, which he determines will assist in the reduction of urban transportation needs, the improvement of mass transportation service, or the contribution of such service toward meeting total urban transportation needs at minimum costs.
