Abstract:This volume is fifth in a series of seven. The other volumes in the series are: Volume I - Evaluation of Rectangular RapidFlashing Beacons (RRFB) at Multilane Roundabouts, Volume II – Assessment of Roundabout Capacity Models for the Highway Capacity Manual, Volume III – Assessment of the Environmental Characteristics of Roundabouts, Volume IV – A Review of Fatal and Severe Injury Crashes at Roundabouts, Volume VI – Investigation of Crosswalk Design and Driver Behaviors, and Volume VII – Human Factor Assessment of Traffic Control Device Effectiveness. These reports document a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) project to investigate and evaluate several important aspects of roundabout design and operation for the purpose of providing practitioners with better information, leading to more widespread and routine implementation of higher quality roundabouts. This report presents an evaluation of the combination of horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, cross section, and curb treatments that sometimes leads to truckload instability or rollover within a roundabout. The study includes a literature review, a review of a sample of incidents involving truck overturns at roundabouts, and a modeling simulation using a multibody dynamics simulation model to evaluate the impact of various design and behavior factors that may impact truck stability in single-lane and two-lane roundabouts. The most significant factor found to affect truck stability was truck speed, followed to a lesser degree by the cross-sectional geometry of two-lane circulatory roadways and the use of the truck apron.
