Abstract:Rapid proliferation of drones creates serious challenges to transportation facilities and the traveling public. Designed to expand and update the results of the Phase I Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System (CUAS) study, the Phase II study presented herein was conducted to review the current technologies available to detect, track, and identify small UAS entering restricted airspace, specifically near critical ground transportation infrastructure including within densely populated metropolitan areas. The study included an expanded literature synthesis, the design of a prototype for field testing of select CUAS technologies, and field demonstrations of selected CUAS technologies. On the basis of this study, recommendations have been made regarding counter-drone technologies and testing procedures in order to find the best available solutions to protect transportation infrastructure from potential drone threats.
