Abstract:Real-time in-vehicle navigation is a significant traveler information service added to the TransGuide system during the Model Deployment Initiative (MDI). The TransGuide In-Vehicle Navigation (IVN) system includes an IVN unit that provides travelers with route guidance, vehicle position, and regional points of interest information. Units currently available on the market utilize a database of transit times for each road segment to calculate the shortest travel time from where the vehicle is located to a point the driver inputs as the destination. These databases are static, as they contain typical transit times that by definition cannot account for real-time congestion caused by traffic accidents, rush hours, public events, etc. The MDI implementation of IVN addresses this shortcoming by providing the units with real-time traffic data. The system includes the infrastructure necessary to deliver the real-time information to vehicles in the San Antonio area and the initial deployment of 590 IVN units that utilize the real-time traffic data.
