Abstract:This brochure, prepared from a slide presentation, contains the Early Assessment estimates for motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2000 and the resulting injuries and fatalities. They are compared to estimates from the 1999 Annual Files. These Early Assessment estimates are based on data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the National Automotive Sampling System General Estimates System (NASS GES). The data show that there were 41,800 fatalities in 2000 compared with 41,611 fatalities in 1999; 3,219,000 persons injured in 2000 compared with 3,236,000 persons injured in 1999; 37,338 fatal crashes in 2000 compared with 37,043 fatal crashes in 1999; and 6,266,000 nonfatal crashes in 2000 compared with 6,242,000 nonfatal crashes in 1999. These Early Assessment estimates will be superceded by estimates based on data files representing all of 2000.
