Abstract:The Erosion and Sediment Control Best Management Practices manuals were developed to assist in design, construction, and post-construction phases of Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) projects. There are five (5) manuals, including the: Field Manual; Reference Manual; Literature Review; Organizational Structure Survey; and Users Survey. The Field Manual provides background to concepts of erosion and sediment control. Most of MDT's best management practices (BMPs) are listed within the manual based on application categories. The Reference Manual provides background to State and Federal regulations associated with erosion and sediment control practices including a general overview of the erosion and sediment processes. The Literature Review identifies documents to aid in the development of an Erosion and Sediment Control Construction Best Management Practices (BMPs) Manual and Training Program. The Erosion and Sediment Control Organizational Structure Report reports on a survey of state departments of transportation conducted to gain knowledge related to erosion and sedimentation organizational structures, controls, designs, implementation, monitoring, maintenance, and removal. The Erosion and Sediment Control Manual and Training Program Users Survey Report details a survey of the Montana Department of Transportation personnel and other erosion and sediment control manual users intended to determine the following: design sources currently used; the choices of type of manuals; BMPs presently used with their efficiencies and inefficiencies; information that should be included in the manual and training program; as well as suggestions of how to restructure the present organization to incorporate personnel responsible for erosion and control tasks.
Supplemental materials include a: Glossary; Implementation Report; and, Training Program. The Training Program Slides are HTML based and can be accessed at: https://www.mdt.mt.gov/research/projects/env/erosion.shtml
