Abstract:The Montana Airports 2016 Economic Impact Study analyzed the qualitative and quantitative impacts of the Montana airport system, including aviation- and non-aviation-related businesses, visitor spending, capital expenditures on construction, and additional spin-off (or "multiplier") effects. Specific activities and uses at each airport were also examined to understand and communicate the wide range of impacts and benefits derived from airport operations. Data was gathered via an extensive surveying effort and supplementary secondary data sources to complete data gaps. Economic modeling utilized the IMPLAN and vFreight™ software platforms. The study determined that Montana's airport system generates a $2.8 billion in total economic impact, supports nearly 24,000 jobs, and generates approximately $839 million in payroll. The results of the project can be used to support decision-making at all levels; promote economic activity and development; and provide a more comprehensive understanding of how broader economic, demographic, and other trends have affected aviation in Montana. This study updated a previous economic impact study conducted in 2007 and 2008.
