Abstract:The relationship between the strength and competitiveness of the nation's economy and the extent, condition and performance of the nation?s transportation system is a topic of critical interest. There is mounting evidence that we, as a nation, are severely underinvesting in the transportation network that is so vital to our economic interests, and that we are paying inadequate attention to the development of transit and other forms of high-capacity surface transportation. In 1984 APTA carried out analyses of the employment and business revenue impacts of investment in public transit. The results from these landmark studies demonstrated for the first time that investment in public transit supports significant job creation and increases in business revenues at the national, state and local level, creating substantial economic benefits in addition to the more obvious mobility benefits provided to riders and the traveling public. This report addresses the following objectives: Update earlier analyses of the job creation and business revenue impacts of investment in public transit at the national level using state of the art analytical techniques; examine and expand estimates of transit's economic impacts in other key dimensions; and, assess the value to the economy of each dollar invested in transit.
