Abstract:The purpose of this research is to determine flood-frequency estimates for USGS gaging stations in Montana. Flood-frequency estimates are determined by fitting a log-Pearson Type III probability distribution to the recorded annual peak flows using methods described in Bulletin 17B of the U.S. Interagency Advisory Committee on Water Data (1982). However, Bulletin 17B analyses using default procedures do not always provide the most accurate flood-frequency estimates for gaging stations with complicating factors. Research activities in the proposed project will focus on improving flood-frequency estimates for gaging stations and publishing the flood-frequency estimates along with detailed documentation of the specific methods used to develop the frequency estimates.
