Abstract:The increased use of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology in public transit has two major impacts on travel forecasting. First, the technology will often result in an improved volume and quality of data that may be used for planning. Second, the technology may improve the performance of the transit system in a way that is visible to the traveler, thus traveler behavior will change.
This handbook presents the impacts of four widely deployed transit ITS technologies: advanced fleet management, transit signal priority, electronic fare collection, and improved traveler information. It suggests both short and long term improvements to the travel forecasting process.
