Improved train location information and vehicle detection combined with grade crossing controls, traveler information, and traffic management can improve safety and reduce delay for both passengers and vehicles. In addition, the possibility of pre-empting the crossing for emergency vehicles, when it is safe to do so, may save lives and hasten medical recovery. The ICS project, designed for a suburban commuter station on the Long Island Rail Road, is unique in controlling both vehicles and trains, to the ultimate benefit of both. The project has not been deployed, so the evaluation is based on impacts estimated from characteristics of the design and the setting.
