• Abstract:
  The purpose of this module is to explain the basic concepts of fabricating steel bridge structures. It is intended to serve as a resource for the engineer while preparing the design of the structure and as a reference throughout the life cycle of the bridge. The methods employed in the fabrication of a bridge structure are as variable as the structure itself. Each fabricator has its own way of solving the problems associated with each structure. This module is to serve as a reference document to facilitate fabricator/engineer communication.

  The previous version of this Handbook was published as FHWA-IF-12-052 and was developed to be current with the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 5th Edition with the 2010 Interims. FHWA-HIF-16-002 was updated in 2015 by HDR, Inc., to be current with the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 7th Edition.
