Abstract:Proceedings from the second Women's Travel Issues National Conference held in Baltimore in October 1996. This website presents series of peer-reviewed papers presented at the Conference that fall into nine substantive categories, plus Poster Sessions which contains brief abstracts of research presented at the Conference. The Proceedings conclude with the Research Agenda developed by the Steering Committee and Conference participants. At the bottom of the page are hyperlinks to the papers and abstracts arranged by categories. All papers are PDF file format. Contains 40 peer-reviewed and commissioned papers on gender-differentiated travel patterns and concerns. Most research showed major differences in the travel patterns of men and women, explained only in part by traditional variables (income, employment, occupations) but far more by the roles women and men accept. At the same time, the papers often showed substantial differences among subgroups of women differentiated by race, ethnicity, or country of birth, and these differences were sometimes greater than aggregate differences between the sexes. Five papers discuss overall trends in women's travel, two present historical perspectives, six discuss women's emerging travel patterns, and four describe the interaction of travel and land use. Another four papers focus on race and ethnicity, three on women with special needs, six on women's travel safety and security, four on women in the transit industry, and six on policy concerns. The volume concludes with a discussion of 32 issues in need of additional research.
