Abstract:Maine was recently ranked ninth in the nation concerning fatalities caused by collisions with utility poles based on miles of travel. The number of collisions and fatalities can be reduced significantly with an updated Utility Pole Placement Policy. Maine's current policy relocates poles only when a section of roadway is reconstructed or rehabilitated. This practice of relocating poles is too slow to reduce the number of vehicle-utility pole collisions. This study was carried out to identify the common factors involved in vehicle-utility pole collisions and suggest corrective measures to update the current policy to aid in reducing the high number of collisions with utility poles.
