Abstract:This report contains the results of an analysis of
traffic accidents in the City of Troy, Michigan, where
the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System
(SCATS) was deployed as part of a federal demonstration
program. The analyses includes a trend analysis
and a comparison with a control city.
The SCATS controllers were installed in 1992 and
1993, and the analyses are based on traffic accident
data from 1989 through 1995. These data, along
with data on intersection geometry and traffic volume
were entered in an Interactive Traffic Accident
Geographic Information (ITAGI) system to assist in
the analyses and to display the results.
There were small changes in overall accident frequency
at various subsets of intersections, but there
was no statistically significant increase or decrease
in system-wide total or injury accidents after the
installation of SCATS.
