Abstract:

This report contains the results of an analysis of ; traffic accidents in the City of Troy, Michigan, where ; the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System ; (SCATS) was deployed as part of a federal demonstration ; program. The analyses includes a trend analysis ; and a comparison with a control city. ; The SCATS controllers were installed in 1992 and ; 1993, and the analyses are based on traffic accident ; data from 1989 through 1995. These data, along ; with data on intersection geometry and traffic volume ; were entered in an Interactive Traffic Accident ; Geographic Information (ITAGI) system to assist in ; the analyses and to display the results. ; There were small changes in overall accident frequency ; at various subsets of intersections, but there ; was no statistically significant increase or decrease ; in system-wide total or injury accidents after the ; installation of SCATS.
