Abstract:This guide can help practicing civil engineers to identify rocks and minerals and to better understand their characteristics and performances in certain applications. The equipment needed for the procedures in this guide is inexpensive and easily obtained. The procedures rely as much as possible on the visual appearance of rocks and minerals. Basic tests for hardness and reactivity with dilute hydrochloric acid are included for help in classifying a sample. The procedures may be carried out in the field or the laboratory. Flowcharts are provided. For comprehensive aggregate identification, testing, and analysis, a qualified geologist, petrographer, or materials engineer should be consulted as appropriate.
