Abstract:The Federal Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program, came into being as a result of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991. In the years since, the ITS field has developed from a collection of ideas and isolated applications of technology into an interrelated program with initial projects already yielding benefits for the nation’s surface transportation system. Since December of 1994, the United States Department of Transportation’s (USDOT’s) ITS Joint Program Office (JPO) has been actively collecting information on the impact of ITS projects on the operation of the surface transportation network. This report continues to build upon empirical results from field operations of deployed systems, supplemented with benefits information based upon modeling studies and statistical studies.
