Abstract:Fewer children are walking to school than ever before. Many researchers contribute this to parents’ fears that the walking environment is unsafe for children. As a result, federal and state programs were created to provide safe routes to school for children. This research will examine the Texas Department of Transportation’s 2002 Safe Routes to Schools Program (SR2S) and will look at the differences between this program and the new program being implemented under the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU).
