Abstract:Renewable energy technologies are likely to become more important as other energy sources become depleted and the cost of power generation using fossil fuels rises. Renewable sources of energy have considerable potential for increasing security of supply although, in most cases, they require significant initial investment. This report reviews the use of two technologies with potential for producing renewable energy on the highway network. They are the production of electricity using solar panels mounted on highway noise barriers, and the storage and redistribution of direct heat retrieved from the solar thermal heating of pavements.
