This report discusses a demonstration project and evaluation of outdoor fluorescent street lighting in Austin, Texas. The study examined the effects of fluorescent light in parking lots and streets, when used in place of high pressure sodium lighting. Results of the study suggest that both lighting sources are similar in the perceptions of brightness, safety and security. The economic evaluation suggests that fluorescent lighting is the most cost-effective when used in new construction, though it can also be used in retrofit construction.
