The 10-year study of asphalt pavement behavior described herein was initiated to follow the changes that occur with time and traffic and to supplement existing information on material properties that contribute to more durable pavements. Measurement of surface characteristics and sampling of asphalt concrete and stone base were conducted twice yearly, during spring and fall, at 32 test points. Properties of the asphalt concrete and stone base important to performance were measured in the laboratory for each sampling period. Samples were taken in wheel-track and shoulder areas to indicate the effect of traffic. A linear regression program was used to analyze the various interrelationships of properties that affect service behavior. The relative importance of the different properties to a given dependent property is indicated by the order in which the variables enter the regression equations. The correlation coefficients generally are low, but the equations provide a useful qualitative indication of the different relationships. A summary of the predominant indications provided by the equations is presented.
