The objective of this research project were to determine the compressive strength and stiffness properties of coupons taken from undamaged portions of bridge piles, the level of loss of creosote and cellulose in the wood material by chemical analysis and the loss of lignin by chemical analysis and microscopic examination. Meanwhile, the research project was to develop guidelines for bench marking basic strength and stiffness properties as a function of age and in-service environment.
