Abstract:The paper looked at the changes of patterns of speech while drivers were talking under different conditions. The changes in speech were used a measure of driver workload. The assumption being that high speech quality implies a lower workload. The study was conducted with a driving simulator. Using a phone (vs. speech with a passenger taking without considering traffic flow) produced a reduction in speech speed and quality, suggesting a greater workload. Speech quality and speed was greater for when a vehicle was stationary (vs. while moving), however results were mixed when comparing the speech patterns of high vs. low demand driving conditions. This research corroborates work which suggests that under some conditions hands-free cell phone conversations can be more distracting than conversations with passengers.
