Abstract:This report summarizes the experience and the test results from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Energy Storage Demonstration Project, a project that was partially funded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). WMATA worked jointly with Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc., and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., to implement the demonstration. Gannett Fleming Transit & Rail Systems served as the technical consultant. The installation was tested under normal revenue service conditions. The test results include energy saving, peak power reduction, and train voltage support that are provided by the 2MW Battery Power System (BPS) installation. In addition, the same installation was tested as an emergency power source to move trains to desired destinations when the traction power system is under a simulated blackout situation. Based on the obtained results and the prevailing electricity cost parameters, return-on-investment calculations were performed for the installation life times of both 10 years and 20 years.
