This publication is a statistical review of reported motor vehicle traffic crashes and other data related to highway safety in the State of Maryland for the year 2008**. Crash data are aggregated by Maryland State Police Central Records Division from 144 law enforcement agencies statewide. Other data are provided through the Maryland Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System project sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Alcohol fatalities are provided through NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). FARS data are obtained solely from the State’s existing documents: • Police Accident Reports, Death Certificates, State Vehicle Registration Files, Coroner/Medical Examiner Reports, State Driver Licensing Files, Hospital Medical Reports, State Highway Department Data, Emergency Medical Service Reports, Vital Statistics, Other State Records
