  • Abstract:
This report presents the results from the 1994 Motor Freight Transportation and Warehousing Survey. This annual sample survey represents all employer firms with one or more establishments that are primarily engaged in providing commercial motor freight transportation or public warehousing services. This includes firms furnishing local or long-distance trucking or transfer services, and those firms engaged in the storage of farm products, furniture or other household goods, or commercial goods of any nature. This survey excludes private motor carriers that operate as auxiliary establishments to non-transportation companies, as well as independent owner-operators with no paid employees. As a result, the dollar volume estimates and estimates of year-to-year percentage change presented in this report should not be interpreted as representing measurements of total trucking industry activity. Statistics in this report are summarized by kind-of-business classification based on the 1987 edition of the Standard Industrial Classification Manual issued by the Office of Management and Budget. Appendix A provides estimated measures of sampling variability (coefficients of variation) for the dollar volume estimates and estimates of year-to-year ratios presented in the report. An explanation of the survey coverage, sampling, and estimation methodology appears in appendix B. Appendix C provides a description of each kind of business included in this report. Copies of the 1994 report forms are provided in appendix D.
