Abstract:This study reviews the issues and implications involved when examining the transit oriented development (TOD) potential in neighborhoods. The primary focus is on intra-regional comparisons, focusing on information pertaining to the relative desirability of places within a region. It looks at understanding the neighborhoods that surround transit centers and their context in terms of the character of areas within walking distance, bicycling distance, and five-mile driving or transit distance. The ranges of analysis include the areas where residents of possible TODs might work, shop, or prefer to go for services. The project includes a comprehensive case study application envisioning the Hayward BART Station area. Additional case studies include the Fruitvale BART in Oakland, Redwood City, and Mountain View CalTrain, Campbell LRT site, and the 65th St. Station area in Sacramento. The relevance of transit-oriented development is explained through detailed tables, charts and maps. Graphics are not reproduced within the text, but included on an accompanying CD-ROM.
