Abstract:Since 1998, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), with support from the USDOT’s ITS Joint Program Office (JPO), has been partnering with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and various research organizations and technology providers to investigate different ITS technologies that might help reduce the numbers of side collisions involving transit buses. Several studies involve the development and testing of side-mounted object detection systems. This report presents findings on driver acceptance of a second generation, Enhanced Object Detection System (EODS) that was evaluated during a 100-day Field Operational Test (FOT) conducted between April and July, 2003 in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania metropolitan area).
