• Abstract:
  The objective of this research project was to address highway truck forecasting necessary to link transportation investments to economic development variables. The first chapter provides a review of freight modeling methods. Subsequent chapters examine issues related to destination choice, mode choice and route choice for urban freight transportation. An overview of issues related to the availability and collection of data for modeling urban freight transportation also is provided. An urban truck travel demand model was developed as part of this project, and the design of this modeling approach, which consists of modules that can be applied independently or linked together into a single modeling framework, is described. This model design has parallels in the passenger transportation arena with respect to the overall conceptual structure, and econometric and statistical issues related to the estimation and application of the model are also similar to those seen in passenger transportation. The final chapter discusses these issues with emphasis on model development, model updating and forecasting. A CD-ROM is included with related information on freight modeling data and networks.
