In this report, the authors introduce an interactive approach for constructing or improving Less-than-Truckload (LTL) distribution networks. The primary consideration for the interactive design process is that of determining breakbulk locations to minimize total transportation and handling costs, based on freight density and transshipment volume analysis. An interactive software decision analysis tool, called BBNET, is introduced as a means of achieving near optimal design without the use of complicated math programming alternatives. The software system is made transportable by using a DOS platform on a personal computer. It is validated using freight density and breakbulk location data supplied by ABF Freight System, Inc. A detailed user?s, manual is provided to enhance technology transfer. 46p.
