  • Abstract:
This Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) project focused on the development of the Improved Metropolitan Area Transportation System (IMATS). The objective of IMATS is to reverse the trend of increasing single-occupant-vehicle (SOV) use by providing a multiple-occupant-vehicle (MOV) transportation system that is equivalent or superior to SOV use in terms of convenience, flexibility, and cost. IMATS employs Instant Rent-A-Car (IRAC), Multiple Occupant Commuter Taxi (MOCT), Conventional Taxis, and transit. Vehicle use is integrated or scheduled by means of a central processor. It is envisioned that IMATS will evolve by sequentially implementing new user services. The IDEA project focused on a technology demonstration of the IRAC and MOCT.
