Abstract:The U.S. transportation system is currently highly dependent on liquid fuels derived from oil. The sharp increase in oil prices over the last two years has highlighted the vulnerabilities inherent in this dependence and has stimulated widespread interest in alternative energy for transportation. Uncertainty about oil prices and the possibility of a sudden supply disruption make reducing U.S. vulnerability to oil market volatility all the more urgent. This white paper presents information and analysis in support of federal policy making to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil while maintaining economic prosperity, trade, mobility, quality of life, and environmental well being.
