Abstract:This report presents the first compilation by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) of information on alternatives to gasoline and diesel fuel. The purpose of the report is: 1) to provide background information on alternative transportation fuels and replacement fuels compared with gasoline and diesel fuels, and 2) to furnish preliminary estimates of alternative transportation fuels and alternatively fueled vehicles as required by the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPACT). Specifically, EIA is required to report annually on: 1) the number and type of alternative fueled vehicles in existence the previous year and expected to be in use the following year; 2) the geographic distribution of these vehicles; 3) the amounts and types of replacement fuels consumed; and, 4) the greenhouse gas emissions likely to result from replacement fuel use. Alternative fueled vehicles are defined in this report as motorized vehicles licensed for on-road use, which may consume alternative transportation fuels.
