Abstract:This report provides a summary of the Phase II portion of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Accelerated Pavement Testing (CAL/APT) Program. The program utilizes two Heavy Vehicle Simulators (HVS). One is used to test full-scale pavement in a controlled environment. The other is used for testing in-service pavements. An extensive laboratory testing program involving both laboratories complements the full-scale accelerated testing. The background for the development of the program, and modifications to the program since its inception in 1994, is provided. A brief description of the HVS unites and associated pavement instrumentation and evaluation equipment routinely used is given. The pavement sections tested thus far are described. The report contains a brief summary for seven studies dealing with pavement studies, construction issues, database considerations, measuring stiffness properties, and economic analyses related to the implementation of initial results obtained from the asphalt pavement studies. The report concludes with a collective analysis of the results presented in the seven studies and provides the bases for recommendations to Caltrans on a number of issues.
