This document has been produced to provide senior transportation managers of state and local departments of transportation with practical guidance for deploying Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) consistent with the National ITS Architecture. The purpose of this document is to show specific ways in which the National ITS Architecture can be used to support the deployment of ITS. The National ITS Architecture defines the components of the surface transportation system, the functions they perform, how they interact and work together, and what information they need to provide transportation services to the public.
