Abstract:Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) apply advanced and emerging technologies in such
fields as information processing, communications, control, and electronics to surface
transportation needs. ITS encompasses a number of diverse program areas including
Advanced Traffic Management Systems, Advanced Traveler Information Systems, Commercial
Vehicle Operations, Advanced Crash Avoidance Systems, Automated Highway System,
Advanced Public Transportation Systems, and Advanced Rural Transportation Systems. Since
ITS is primarily a research program, key findings obtained are considered a valid basis for
reporting on what has been achieved. Accordingly, this paper provides answers to the
question “What Have We Learned?” on the ITS program. Some of the key findings in the
various program areas are summarized below. Additional findings may be found in the body
of this paper.
