Abstract:In 2005, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) initiated a program to develop and test a 5.9GHz-based Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) proof of concept (POC). The POC was implemented in the northwest suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. This report describes the overall approach undertaken to prove the VII concept through a structured testing program and describes the overall experimental design utilized in proving the VII concept, by providing an overview of the system architecture and the design of systems, subsystems, and components, as well as the public sector applications developed to prove some of the system concepts. It outlines the purpose and procedures for various tests, identifies the test articles, and documents the results of that testing. It also discusses the implications of those test results relative to the overall viability of the VII concept and identifies recommendations for future work, including if and how designs and standards may need to be modified.
