Abstract:This report presents findings of the 2016-17 TxDOT culvert load rating research study. The study focused on three basic goals: (1) evaluate a series of usability-based load-rating enhancements for application to TxDOT’s pre-1980, on-system, bridge-class, cast-in-place, reinforced concrete box culverts, (2) update TxDOT’s Culvert Rating Guide, and (3) update TxDOT’s culvert load rating software. The enhancements were done to expand model usability and included (a) empirical evaluation of the influence of roadway pavement type on culvert load rating, (b) empirical evaluation of alternative effective moment of inertia values on load rating, (c) the addition of load rating options for published alternative truck load patterns such as Specialized Hauling Vehicles (SHVs) and the HL-93 design truck, and (d) consideration of alternative load factors (gamma values). The Culvert Rating Guide, 2nd Edition incorporates the latest information, policy, and guidance and includes both validity model enhancements (previous research) and usability model enhancements (this study), as well as procedure improvements for the culvert load rating method. CULVLR: Culvert Load Rating, Version 2.0 is a Windows®-based desktop application software package that automates the process by which TxDOT engineers and their consultants may perform load rating calculations for TxDOT’s inventory of reinforced concrete box culverts as per TxDOT’s Culvert Rating Guide 2nd Edition.
