Abstract:This overview provides a description of the proceedings of a conference entitled, "National Parks: Transportation Alternatives and Advanced Technology for the 21st Century," sponsored by the Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University, Bozeman, and held at Big Sky, Montana, on June 3-5, 1999. The aim of the conference was to exchange ideas among possible partners on the use of advanced transportation technologies that might address transportation challenges facing the increasingly popular U.S. National Parks. Discussion group tracks focused on themes such as: 1) Regional Transportation Planning and Coordination; 2) Traffic and Demand Management Alternatives; 3) Transit Alternatives: Shuttles to Light Rail Service; 4) Traveler and Visitor Information Needs; and 5) Alternative Fuels Panel. The discussion groups for each track examined challenges and needs in their respective areas, and identified opportunities for future applications and research. Presentations made at the plenary and general sessions are included, along with workshop summaries.
