Abstract:The material and observations in this report resulted from research performed under Project Plan Agreement No. OM-403, between the Department of Transportation's Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration (OST-M) and the Transportation Systems Center (TSC). The work was performed by the Center for Transportation Information in the Office of Information Resources at the TSC. The U.S. transportation system is characterized by many interrelated information systems that provide data about the movement of people and things, transportation facilities, energy conservation, and safety. As such, the information systems are changing because of deregulation and changes in the economy. The purpose of this document is to provide a working level inventory which will be periodically updated with information obtained from the Department of Transportation's modal administrators. This document provides a comprehensive inventory of the transportation information systems maintained by the Department. The systems listed are recurring transportation statistical and data information systems devoted to the collection, production, publications, and dissemination of technical research information, transportation related data, and statistical data bases. Three elements have been added to this inventory in order to determine the size and magnitude of the DOT systems. These elements are; 1) computer system used (i.e., DEC-10, IMB 4381, etc.), 2) number of records, and 3) computer cost per year (i.e., the amount of funds spent per year for the computer time, paper, etc.)
