Abstract:SunLine Transit Agency has demonstrated hydrogen and fuel cell bus technologies for more than 10 years. This report describes operations at SunLine for their newest prototype fuel cell bus and five compressed natural gas (CNG) buses (with model year 2010-level emissions). SunLine provides public transit services to the Coachella Valley area of California. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has been evaluating alternative fuel and advanced propulsion equipped transit buses since the early 1990s. This fuel cell bus at SunLine is being evaluated to document the results and help determine the progress toward technology readiness. NREL uses a standard data-collection and analysis protocol originally developed for DOE heavy-duty vehicle evaluations. This protocol was documented in a joint evaluation plan (with the Federal Transit Administration) for transit bus evaluations
