  • Abstract:
Selected data on highway toll facilities in the United States are contained in Table T-1 of this report based on a survey of facilities in operation, financed, or under construction as of January 1, 1987. The data includes information such as the name, financing or operating authority, location and termini, feature crossed, length, and road system for toll bridges, roads, tunnels, and ferries connecting highways. For toll facilities located on the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, the Interstate route numbers are included in Table T-1, Parts 1 & 3. A functional classification system code has also been included for toll bridges, roads, and tunnels in Table T-1, Parts 2 & 4, respectively. Toll ferries are identified in Table T-1, Part 5. Table T-2 contains a list of those projects under serious consideration as toll facilities, awaiting completion of financing arrangements, or proposed as new toll facilities that are being studied for financial and operational feasibility. This report is not intended to be a complete reference on toll facilities nor is it intended to duplicate data that are published elsewhere. Nearly all of the publicly owned toll authorities publish monthly and/or quarterly, semiannual, and annual reports that contain such information as width and clearance on bridges, type of structure, load limits, year built or put in service, traffic volumes, cost, toll rates, etc. On ferries, information such as seasonal or hourly operating schedules has been included when easily obtainable, but complete schedde information and information on number and capacity of boats in operation may be obtained directly from the operating authority. Information on revenues, expenditures, and outstanding indebtedness for public toll facilities is contained in Highway Statistics, which is published annually by the Federal Highway Administration, Other organizations also compile data relating to toll facilities. The International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association, Inc., with offices at 2120 L Street, W W., Suite 305, Washington, D.C. 20037, maintains an address directory of its membership and serves as an information clearing house and research center. It also conducts surveys and studies and publishes a variety of reports, statistics and analyses. The American Automobile Association, 8111 Gatehouse Road, Falls Church, Virginia 22042, compiles a directory of toll facilities containing such current information as rates, load limits, frequency of service, etc. The data for this report were obtained by the field offices of the Federal Highway Administration in cooperation with the State highway agencies. The material was collected and organized by the Office of Highway Information Management. Comments or additional information are welcomed and may be submitted to the Highway System Performance Division, HPM-20.
