This Application Requirements Document for the Transit Safety Retrofit Package (TRP) Development captures the

system, hardware and software requirements towards fulfilling the technical objectives stated within the contract.

To achieve the objective of the study, the TRP project includes developing, testing, installing, and maintaining retrofit
;
packages on three transit buses drawn from the University of Michigan transit fleets; developing two new transit safety
;
applications (Pedestrian Warning and Vehicle Turning Right in Front of a Transit Vehicle); and collecting and providing
;
data from the equipped buses to the Volpe Center for an independent evaluation.

The specific objective of the TRP project is to design and develop safety applications for transit vehicles that can
;
communicate V2V as well as V2I for enhanced transit vehicle and pedestrian safety. Ultimately, it is of interest to
;
determine if DSRC technologies can be combined with on-board applications to provide real-time alerting of
;
pedestrians in crosswalks as well as right turning vehicles in front of the transit vehicle
