Abstract:The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is a new agency established on January 1, 2000, within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). The FMCSA mission is to improve truck and bus safety on our Nation's highway. In 1998, 5,374 people were killed and 127,000 were injured in traffic crashes involving commercial motor vehicles. The top goal of the FMSCA is to reduce fatalities from crashers involving large trucks by at least 50 percent from the 1998 baseline by the close of 2009. The Safety Action Plan 2000-2003 describes the actions the FMSCA will take to reach that goal. The plan directs attention to those areas of greatest concern - poor drivers, unsafe carriers, and substandard vehicles; at the same time it places special attention on truck and bus safety at our borders. The plan addresses four key areas: increasing enforcement; increasing safety awareness; improving safety information systems and commercial motor vehicle technologies; and strengthening Federal commercial equipment and operating standards. 7 Figures, organization chart, and glossary. 383k, 44p.
