Abstract:Today, transportation agencies are beginning to address the need for threat and vulnerability assessments, and re-examine how existing emergency management plans will be implemented during a homeland security emergency or alert. Travel information is an important component of emergency management, and the telephone is one of many delivery mechanisms. As 511 systems become more widely deployed, it is reasonable to ask ? what role should 511 systems play during homeland security emergencies and alerts, and what are the organizational, technical, cost, and other impacts of doing so? While it does not provide the solutions, this White Paper highlights the issues and suggests related guidelines, for consideration by the 511 Deployment Coalition Policy Group. This White Paper discusses the challenges and opportunities for 511 systems, their designers, and their operators. This document is available also in MSWord and PDF versions hyperlinked from the beginning of this HTML version.
