Abstract:The United States and Europe share common commercial vehicle safety issues, including a debate over access for longer combination vehicles; a shortage of commercial vehicle drivers; the need to integrate emerging public and private information technology systems; emerging technologies and developments in areas of safety systems that necessitate new standards; the emergence of rules/regulations from a centralized government with a decentralized enforcement approach. Europe and the United States are also approaching commercial vehicle safety issues in similar ways that strive to strengthen the relationships between driver; vehicle, rules, and regulations; and the supporting organizations and institutions. To explore ways to improve commercial vehicle safety on America?s roadways, the Federal Highway Administration?s International Technology Exchange Program convened the Commercial Vehicle Safety (CVS) Panel. The Panel focused its research on four European countries ? Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, and France.
