Abstract:The objective of this report is to raise awareness among designers construction engineers, and managers of the applications and benefits of full road closure during rehabilitation and construction activities. Based on interviews with project personnel and literature reviews, six projects using a full road closure approach are described, including benefits, considerations for success, and lessons learned. Factors related to duration, cost, safety, mobility, quality and public sentiment during the application of full road closure are presented. Information on the full road closure strategy implemented in each area is described. For each site, the information provided includes: 1) Project description ; 2) Reasons for using full road closure; 3) Benefits of using full road closure; and, 4) Lessons learned. The report also provides brief discussions of projects where alternatives to full road closure are implemented. These include the following: limited capacity closures, nighttime/off-peak closures ramp closures, and intermittent closures.
