Abstract:Disruptive technologies refer to innovations that, at first, may be considered unproven, lacking refinement, relatively unknown, or even impractical, but ultimately they supplant existing technologies and/or applications. In general, disruptive technologies and innovations: - Are simpler, cheaper, more reliable, more popular, and more convenient than established technologies. - Advance at a rapid pace and/or experience significant technological breakthroughs. - Experience relatively fast penetration in the market. - Have broad-based (as opposed to niche) markets and significant economic impact. This report examines technology disruption with the objective of identifying areas where innovation may impact the transportation sector and associated policies.
