Abstract:

The purpose of this research was to identify the pressing workforce issues confronted by transit authorities ; nationwide and promising ways in which they are being addressed. The study also included a closer ; examination of New York City Transit (NYCT), the nation’s largest transit authority, to consider its challenges ; and which solutions could be brought to bear to address them. The research questions guiding the study were: ;  How do the labor and management of the nation’s transit authorities define their workforce ; challenges? ;  How have they addressed these challenges? ;  What if any workforce issues uniquely apply to NYCT’s workforce? ;  How is NYCT addressing the identified issues? ;  What other strategies can be adopted by NYCT to address its challenges? ; The results are expected to be instructive not only to NYCT, but also to transit systems and their labor partners ; throughout the nation. The findings are especially important in light of the transit industry’s unique economic ; and public safety importance, and the career opportunities the industry can provide to current and future ; workers who have been negatively affected by the confluence of globalization and technology.
